Jan 13: Breathe Deep. Write Deep. Meditation for Writers with Busy Minds

I’ll be starting 2019 off by teaching one of my favorite classes at The Writing Barn, “Breath Deep. Write Deep. Meditation for Writers with Busy Minds.” I love this class because it combines my two passions—meditation and writing.

Sit. Breathe. Write.

Meditation and writing compliment each other beautifully. Meditation is an act of deep listening, and writing is taking notes on what you hear. But what if all you hear is senseless chatter, nagging doubts, and critical voices? Keep listening! There’s a quiet beyond the noise. It’s in this quiet that stories are born.

This class will focus on learning how to write from the quiet. But first you have to find it. Meditation trains the mind to let go of distractions and return to the breath, over and over and again. It’s this act of letting go and returning to the present that settles the mind, connects us with our calm, and helps us hear our own voice. Now it’s time to write—to let go of the mind’s chatter and return to the page, over and over again, to express this voice with both clarity and insight.

Breathe Deep. Write Deep. Meditation for Writers with Busy Minds

When: January 13, 2019, from 1:00 – 6:00

Where: The Writing Barn, Austin, TX

What You Will Learn:

  • The basics of meditation, including what meditation is (and isn’t), proper posture, and how to establish a daily practice
  • How to let go of distractions during mediation and discover the “big sky” of your mind
  • How to return to this big sky while writing and use it as a source of inspiration, insight, and clarity
  • How to use mindfulness practices to face the particular challenges of being a writer, including criticism (both our own and that of others), self doubt, and pressures to be productive

Who Should Take This Course:

  • Writers with busy minds
  • Writers who are curious about meditation
  • Writers who want to learn new skills in order connect with their own creativity
  • Writers who want to improve how they deal with the unique stresses and insecurities of the writing life

New Class: Intro to Meditation

In addition to being a writer, I’m a spiritual director and meditation teacher. I help my clients lead more creative and connected lives. Many people think meditation is about emptying your mind. It’s not! It’s about starting over. . . with each moment . . . each breath. It’s about letting go of the busy-ness inside (and all around you) and reconnecting with your life in the present.

This fall, I’ll be offering an Introduction to Meditation class to help people develop or deepen their own sitting practice. If you’d like to learn how to meditate in a supportive group environment with an experienced instructor, here are the details:

DATE:
Mondays Oct 1, 8, 15 & 22
TIME: 6:00 – 7:30 pm
PLACE: 1006 Rock Street, Suite 102 / Georgetown, TX
COST: $125.00 (includes a copy of the book “Real Happiness” by Sharon Salzberg)
FORMAT: Online or in person

Aug. 26: Book Talk at Barrow Brewing

I grew up in Salado, Texas, population 900(ish). My family had no television, so I spent all my time either inside reading about magical worlds or outside pretending I lived in one (which of course I did). To this day, the “super powers” I developed growing up in this small town are what I rely on as a writer—a love of books, an attention span in keeping with the pace of life, and a sense of wonder in the natural world.

I’ll be returning to Salado to give a talk about how my life as a writer was inspired and informed by growing up there. I’ll be at Barrow Brewing on August 26, from 4:00-5:00. Come by, say hi, grab a beer and a book. I’d love to see you there!

Aug. 2-5: “Breathe Deep. Write Deep. Meditation for Writers with Busy Minds”

I’m thrilled to be a guest teacher for a weekend intensive at The Writing Barn in Austin, Aug 2-5. I’ll be offering a class called “Breathe Deep. Write Deep. Meditation for Writers with Busy Minds.”

Meditation isn’t about quieting the mind. It’s about changing our relationship with the noise we find there—the nagging doubts, constant comparisons, and never-ending to-do list. It’s about noticing the distractions and letting them go, only to discover the silence underneath them all. That’s where our stories come from . . . Join me as I teach you how to connect with your own creativity and allow your ideas to emerge and gently shine both on paper and in life!

Other faculty include the fabulous Bethany Hegedus, Cecily Sailer, and Claire Campbell.

WHY AM I ME? Named a Notable Book for a Global Society

WHY AM I ME?

I’m so pleased to announce that WHY AM I ME? was selected by the International Literacy Association (ILA) as a 2018 Notable Book for a Global Society. Every year, the ILA selects twenty-five books that help promote understanding across lines of culture, race, sexual orientation, values, and ethnicity. This outstanding list of books was developed “to help students, teachers, and families identify books that promote understanding of and appreciation for the world’s full range of diverse cultures and ethnic and racial groups.” Books like these make the world a better place!

WHY AM I ME? Translations

One of the most exciting things for me as a writer is having my work translated into other languages. It’s a thrill to imagine children from other countries reading my work in their native tongue. I’m thrilled to say that WHY AM I ME? has been translated into Spanish and will soon be available in both Japanese and Arabic!
